Thursday 4th June – relax – open water swim - hot and sunny
Very hot this morning but did exercises before it got too much! After
breakfast we packed up and drove down to Sigean Lidl to stock up and to get
water at a place we discovered yesterday which looks like a place for
lorries or council vehicles to fill up! I jammed my thumb in the
driver’s door and the air did turn blue for a while. It looks bad with
black bruise creeping across my thumb nail but it doesn’t hurt very much
luckily! We went to the Super U in Port La Nouvelle to see if they had a
fan you can run off your car battery which would be great in all this heat
but unfortunately none small enough:( Drove to the beach at the jetty again
and spent the afternoon enjoying the breeze right on the water’s edge and
I swam again. When we first arrived I tried to help yet another car stuck
in the sand. This one had virtually nose dived in head first! It was not
happening with any kind of manual help so his mate went off and came back
in a 4 x 4 in the end. We had our lunch, read, had coffee and cake and
were still on the beach at 6 p.m. Drove to Les Cabanes to park up in a
spot we found yesterday right on the etang where we had lunch on our bike
ride (overlooking the lovely cement works but we don’t look that way!).
Fish in the shallows with their fins out of the water and some jumping out
too:) We went for a walk round the track over the etang after a salmon in
parcels tea. Didn’t stay out too long as the mozzies had started to
gather in the undergrowth!! None near the van though so not a problem.

Friday 5th June – bike ride and open water swim ***** sunny
Did our exercises out in the sun and had breakfast then drove to our usual
spot on the beach at La Franqui. We got the bikes off and biked across the
beach to La Franqui village. Yet again we passed about 50 children having
great fun land yachting this time!! Their teachers were taking lots of
photos as they were gliding around the course the instructors had put out
on the sand:) Later on we saw them pond dipping in the etang:) We cycled
to the end of the village past our favourite blue shuttered house. Found
the road up to the cliffs where we knew the path went along to Leucate but
had to carry our bikes up some steps to get up the last bit. It was quite
easy really as our new bikes are really light, unlike our old ones – we
wouldn’t have done it with them!! Once at the top we carried on along
the path right on the cliff edge and past our other favourite house – an
old fort which has been renovated and has stunning views over the whole
length of the beach to Port La Nouvelle and the beautiful sea which is
every shade of blue:) It is quite a bumpy path and goes so close to the
edge – just what mountain bikes are meant for!! There was one clap of
thunder and it got very dark in the distance over the sea but it soon
disappeared and we had the sun all day. We ate our lunch sitting on the
cliff overlooking the small beach nearing Leucate. A few people had
scrambled down and there were some divers. We have been down there on
previous holidays so stayed at the top and watched the paragliders playing
with their canopies but finally giving up when it became clear that there
wasn’t enough wind. Down into Leucate Plage and along the cycle track,
past the camper aire and to the tiny port on the etang. Eels and jellyfish
under the bridge today – we saw an octopus last time! Back to Leucate
Plage Prom where we really pushed the boat out and had a proper ice cream
cone for 7 euros for 2 – about £5!! It was lovely and we ate it sitting
on the prom wall. Peddled back to Leucate town past the windsurfing shops
on the roundabout (all shut in the afternoon). Decided to go back along
the main road rather than our other plan of visiting the etang where the
camper aire is. We cycled back to the beach through cassoules (the camper
aire barrier has disappeared and the pay machines didn’t appear to be
working so whether it is free again we don’t know). Got back to the van
after 20 miles and over 4 hours out! We put the bikes back on the rack and
took a cuppa down to our spot on the edge of the sea. We both went in
skinny dipping today and it was lovely, a bit rougher than the other days
but the waves were fun and the water surprisingly warm:) We swam out to
the sand bank which is a little away from the shore and you can stand out
there after being out of your depth for some way. Back to sit in the sun,
read and doze before returning to Les Cabanes for our overnight spot. We
sat out until 9 p.m. as it was so warm and there are absolutely no flies or
mozzies! Great day.
